PE Requirement for 9th & 10th Grade Students

The Oxnard Union High School District is enforcing the requirement that band students at all the high schools take four semesters of PE during their 9th and 10th grade years instead of having marching band count as four semesters of PE during 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade years. All other districts in Ventura County allow marching band to count for all four semesters of PE.

The effect is that the Concert Band and Symphonic Band enrollment has plummeted at all six high schools for Spring semester as the freshman and sophomore students are being placed in PE classes. This will negatively affect performance at concert festivals this Spring as well as musical preparation for marching band in the fall.
