You Can be Instrumental in Student Success

Music Education Improves Achievement  …for Life!
Music is vital to a well-rounded education as noted in both the Standards for California Public Schools and the federal No Child Left Behind Act. There is a significant positive relationship between music education and academic performance in reading, spelling, mathematics, listening, verbal abilities and motor skills. Through exposure to music, students are better positioned for success:

Music education has proven to increase standardized test scores – 22% better in English and 20% better in math (MENC Journal of Research in Music Education; winter 2006)

Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs) (Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 1998)

A 2007 Harris Interactive Poll showed 88% of people with post-graduate education were involved in music while in school and 83%  of people earning $150,000 or more had a music education.

Believing that music education is an integral, necessary part of a well-rounded education and of each child’s preparation for life in the 21st century, SOKM supports the many musical programs offered by PVSD, including:

  • Beginning Band, Intermediate Band and Advanced Band at both comprehensive middle schools: Las Colinas and Monte Vista.
  • PVSD Youth Arts Academy – offering visual and performing arts classes after school and during the summer, open to all 4th – 8th grade students in Ventura County. Classes include Beginning Band, Intermediate band, Jazz Band, Beginning Strings, Orchestra, and Choir.
  • The New West Symphony Music Van – where all 3rd grade students learn about the four families of instruments, as well as how sound is produced.

Community Concerts
SOKM organizes or participates in numerous free concerts given each year at schools and in the community: Camarillo Christmas Parade, Camarillo Farmer’s Market, Coffee bean & Tea Leaf, SCSBOA Music Festivals, Camarillo Health Care Center, Somis Thursday Club, and the Camarillo Library. These events benefit not only District students and families but the entire Camarillo and Somis communities. We are grateful for your continued support as audience members and financial contributors.

Instruments for Students in Need
SOKM will continue the goal of building an inventory of musical instruments to loan to interested students who could otherwise not afford instrumental music as part of the school education. Fundraising efforts allow us to purchase new and used instruments. Additionally, donations of used instruments are greatly appreciated and are refurbished by SOKM for school use.

Our Kids Need Your Help
Years of drastic budget cuts leave our schools woefully short of funding for music and the arts, yet it remains essential to nurture students’ emotional intelligence as well as their academic intelligence. Among other outcomes, music and the arts foster creativity, problem solving, and teamwork which, in turn, enhance reading, writing, and math. SOKM fundraising supports music classes for all interested students, including those whose families would otherwise find the costs prohibitive.

You Can Help!
SOKM will continue to raise the funds needed to offer the best opportunities in music education to our children… but we need your help! You donations ensure we have instruments, music arrangements, supplies, and are able to assist with music teachers’ salaries. Thank you many times over for those who have participated with SOKM since 1991. Together, we will keep the music alive!
